The centenarian Peggy Hovell is still driving and has an impressive 85 years behind the wheel - despite never having taken a driving test. Incredibly, Peggy has never had an accident, and the pensioner is a keen motoring enthusiast. Peggy was taught to drive by her grandfather in 1925 – 10 years before compulsory tests were introduced.
In fact, the only time she has ever been officially assessed was at the age of 98, and the pensioner demanded a test to prove she was a capable driver.
Peggy says: “I love driving and much prefer it to walking. I learnt to drive when I was 15 - the driving test didn't start for another few years and I was already on the road by then. The only time I took a test was when I turned 98 and my insurance tried to put the price up - I was furious. I decided to take a test myself, so I got an examiner to come out. I left the car in the garage so he could see I could reverse without knocking into anything.
I deliberately chose roads with heavy traffic on and he said he had confidence in me the whole time. I've got a letter then where he says "Mrs Hovell drives as well as a good driver 30-40 years younger than her", and the insurance company has made concessions, so that was worthwhile”.
Peggy has had 11 cars over the years including three Hondas, six Fords and a Vauxhall. All news
