Volkswagen company decided to install Driver Drowsiness Detection system by Bosch in its new Alltrack model. The system launched by Bosh yet in 2010 is able to detect the initial signs of driver’s fatigue causing short bouts of unconsciousness called "microsleep".
The Bosch Driver Drowsiness Detection system is designed to monitor steering movements for tell-tale signs of fatigue. When detected, the driver is alerted to his or her condition and advised to take a break from driving. According to Bosch, these signs come as a result of deterioration in the driver's fine motor control as a result of fatigue and include more frequent correction of small steering mistakes. Using an algorithm which detects changes in steering behaviour during the course of the journey, Bosch claims to be able to detect the onset of fatigue from sudden, slight yet quick steering movements during a time of otherwise little steering activity. The information used by the system can be provided from a vehicle's existing power steering system or the steering angle sensor. When detected, the fatigue levels are monitored and - if they exceed a predefined threshold - the driver is alerted via a coffee-cup icon on the instrument panel. All news
